Domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It encompasses a wide range of behaviors used to gain power and control over another person. These include:

Emotional abuse (manipulation, gaslighting, intimidation)

Psychological abuse (threats, isolation, mind games)

Financial abuse (controlling finances, preventing access to money or employment)

Sexual abuse (coercion, assault)

Technological abuse (monitoring devices, stalking through technology)

Perpetrators often use multiple forms of abuse simultaneously, making it harder for victims to recognize or escape the cycle.

Fear of retaliation or escalation, financial dependency, concerns for children's safety and custody, lack of access to safe housing or support systems, emotional manipulation, including feelings of guilt or shame.

Statistically, the risk of severe violence or even homicide increases dramatically when a victim attempts to leave.

Domestic abuse occurs across all demographics:

Gender: While women are disproportionately affected, men, transgender, and non-binary individuals can also be victims.

Age: Abuse affects teens (dating violence) to the elderly (elder abuse).

Socioeconomic Status: It impacts both wealthy and low-income individuals.

Race and Culture: Abuse occurs in every racial, ethnic, and cultural group, though cultural factors may influence reporting and support-seeking behaviors.

Survivors often suffer from:

Chronic health conditions: Migraines, gastrointestinal disorders, and chronic pain.

Mental health issues: PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Reproductive health issues: Increased risk of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and complications during pregnancy.
Children exposed to domestic violence are also at risk for developmental delays, behavioral issues, and perpetuating the cycle of abuse in adulthood.

According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), domestic violence is one of the primary causes of homelessness among women and children in the United States. Many victims are forced to flee their homes with little notice or resources. Shelters often operate at full capacity, and access to affordable housing remains a critical barrier to establishing independence and safety.
